By converting their data into little packets similar to the data flowing on the Internet, VoIP providers can piggyback on internet infrastructure and bypass the telecom companies' PSTN networks. Voice signals can be transmitted to any place on earth with internet connectivity. All it needs is a broadband phone with the required voice codecs to convert analog signals to digital data and vice-versa.
Setup requirements for VoIP
The user has to have an ADSL line with a modem and an internet account provided by an ISP. This means the user only needs broadband internet, and not the normal telephone line and instrument that come with a landline subscription. The broadband phone, which looks just like a cordless phone, has to be purchased if the user does not wish to use a computer to make calls. The phone calls work just as well using the software on the computer with a headset.
Usage: Note that a VoIP phone does not require a computer to make a call. It can connect directly to the modem. But the computer may be required for the initial setup and configuration when the phone is purchased. Apart from this installation process, the usage is exactly like an ordinary phone. Users can simply dial, have a conversation and then hang up.
